Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement: What's the Difference?

A plain-language comparison of Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans for Colorado seniors.

This is the question we hear most often from people turning 65. Both options work alongside Original Medicare, but they work very differently.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and replace how you receive your Part A and Part B benefits. Many include prescription coverage and extras like dental or vision. They usually use provider networks and have copays, with a yearly out-of-pocket maximum.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

A Medicare Supplement works with Original Medicare to help pay costs like deductibles and coinsurance. You generally can see any provider who accepts Medicare, and you typically add a separate Part D drug plan. Premiums are often higher, but out-of-pocket costs are more predictable.

Which is right for you?

It depends on your doctors, your budget, how often you travel and your health. There's no one-size answer — that's why we sit down with you in person. We do not offer every plan available in your area; for all options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
